Directing for Theatre

Interested in trying your hand at directing? Or extending your skills further?

Join Andrew Sutherland, director of UHT’s Semester 2 production ‘Party’ and VCA PhD Candidate for a practical two-hour session. 

This workshop will break down the role of the director and share ways to approach directing a play. From planning rehearsals to investigating the big ideas of the play; collaborating with designers; and helping to answer ‘where do I even start?', you’ll be offered tools and resources to enhance your directing process in a fun and collaborative workshop environment.

About Andrew Sutherland

Andrew Sutherland (he/they/she) is a theatre practitioner whose body of practice hails from between Boorloo/Perth and Singapore, currently based on the unceded lands of the Kulin nation in Naarm. He is currently a PhD candidate and lecturer at the Victorian College of the Arts. Recent directing credits include The Crises Unending (Victorian College of the Arts 2025), Unnatural (The Blue Room Theatre 2024) and Democracy Repair Services (The Blue Room Theatre 2023).
