General Secretary
My name is Daniel Motika and I’m your 2026 UMSU General Secretary. I am an Arts Student and this is my third year at Unimelb.
While the UMSU President serves as the face of the organisation, the General Secretary is responsible for the internal operation of UMSU. I am responsible for governance and minute taking, publishing all communications, administering grants and many other things! Despite not being a public facing position, I still serve as a point of contact for students, particularly when it comes to complaints and other grievances.
As a student representative, I work with a large network of other elected representatives, volunteers and stakeholders to address the issues facing students. Whether it be food insecurity, academic challenges or simply finding your community on campus, UMSU is here to help and I look forward to supporting students across every one of Unimelb’s campuses.
UMSU is governed by an elected Students’ Council, which meets regularly, and meetings are open to all students. Departments of UMSU also hold their own committee meetings and collectives, providing all students with a chance to have their say in the direction and activities of the student union. The General Secretary is responible for facilitating Council and Committee meetings. Meeting details can be found here for Students’ Council, and here for Committees.
The General Secretary’s office is located on the 2nd floor of Building 168 with the rest of your student representatives.
Warm regards,
Daniel Motika
