The University of Melbourne Student Union Inc (UMSU) is a dynamic, for-purpose incorporated association, serving as the representative body for all students at the University of Melbourne. Structured around student control of student affairs, UMSU is governed by an elected Students’ Council and twelve student departments, chosen by and from the student body.

About the role

This position is responsible for delivering high‑quality assessment and triage services to support the effective operation of the Advocacy Service. The role provides accurate, timely advice to students on a broad range of issues affecting their rights and interests, including the provision of a limited advocacy function to ensure students are supported and their rights are protected and maintained.

This position provides front line risk-assessment of student contacts with the Advocacy Service for matters impacted by gender-based violence (GBV). The role is responsible for conducting initial risk assessments in a trauma-informed, culturally safe, and student-centred manner, ensuring responses are timely, respectful and aligned with the National Higher Education Code to Prevent and Respond to Gender-based Violence (National Code).

UMSU provides student-facing services and events on University of Melbourne campuses, and work is undertaken in person and on site (and after hours as required). UMSU staff employment conditions are governed by the University of Melbourne Student Union Agreement 2023-2025 and associated policies, such as the Flexible Work Policy.

Your Expertise (Need to Have)

  • A degree with at least four years’ subsequent experience, or extensive experience and management expertise in technical or administrative fields, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience, education and training.
  • Demonstrated experience assessing, triaging and prioritising a broad range of complex and sensitive matters, exercising sound judgement, identifying risk, and allocating cases appropriately in a fast‑paced service environment.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting gender‑based violence (GBV) risk assessments in line with the National Code, applying trauma‑informed, safety‑focused and culturally responsive approaches to support affected individuals.
  • Demonstrated experience providing high‑level administrative support, including maintaining accurate records, coordinating resources and supporting recruitment processes.
  • Proven ability to provide responsive, empathetic and person‑centred support to clients, including those experiencing distress, trauma or complex personal circumstances.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear, accurate and persuasive documentation such as submissions, appeals, complaints and case notes, and to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Highly developed time management and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage competing priorities in high-volume work environments.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting project delivery within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficient computer skills, including fast and accurate word processing and some experience with case management systems.
  • Sensitivity to diverse cultural issues and demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from varied cultural backgrounds.
  • A valid employee Working with Children Check.
