This year the Department is excited to deliver three collectives. This is a fantastic opportunity to come together with like-minded individuals, so please click on the headings to sign up for as many groups as you’d like. They are all FREE and will start up in Week 4!
NOTE: only Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students currently enrolled at the University of Melbourne are eligible to participate in these collectives.
- The group will catch-up once a month to have a yarn and weave together. An experienced weaver will host each session and moderate discussion.
- All skills levels are welcome! Everyone who signs up will receive a starter kit and the host will teach everyone the basics. At each session, different techniques will also be taught to those interested in experimenting with new weaving styles.
Blak Queer Collective
- This collective is open to all Queer Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. This is a safe space for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer, Sistergirl and Brotherboy students to come together and support one another. The group will meet once a month to have a yarn and catch-up. UMSU Indigenous will provide funds so the collective can get together off campus (i.e. at Yo-Chi) and attend events (i.e. Midsumma and Melbourne Queer Film Festival).
- This is a social space for mob to come together, hang out, explore Naarm (Melbourne), and discuss all things Blak as you navigate the University landscape. UMSU Indigenous will provide funds so the group can do a different activity each month, which may include going to a Blak comedy festival, a gallery featuring a Blak artist, attending a public lecture by a prominent Blak individual or seeing a film produced by or featuring Blak talent.
